Design and Prep Phase!

designing! While the winter weather is keeping us inside, we have been discussing designs for the new building. Topics such as bedroom size, water filtration, insulated or non-insulated floors, types of rocket stoves and ovens, and straw-bales versus reclaimed foam offcuts have filled our days. Our resident DIY architect Chris has gotten to a pretty good place in terms of the basic layout after numerous re-drawings. Today we started on the design for our indoor communal kitchen (we plan on building a larger outdoor kitchen in the future). There’s really not much worse than a poorly designed kitchen so we are trying to take our time on this and be meticulous.

In addition to the planning, we have been visiting the dump and tire shops to gather our building blocks – tires. We felt a little behind with 100 tires in the field out of the estimated 1000. But after broadening our size requirement to R-14 and 16, we were able to quickly fill up the truck and trailer with 100 tires. Only 8 more runs to go!
